How to Increase Shorthand Speed

By adopting following methods you can increase your shorthand writing speed. These methods are given below:
1. Practice
2. Special Outlines
3. Special Phrases
4. Control Your Nerves
5. Set Realistic Targets and Achieve Them

1. Practice:
Practice, practice and practice. Shorthand tutors generally recommend one hour a day for contours and dictations. The more time you spend on shorthand, the more success you will achieve. Depending on your personal experience, if you can not handle one hour a day, it is best to practice little and often only for hours. I've sometimes found that after a long time, there was a tendency to wonder why a word had a certain outline and stuck in useless details. Try to practice 30 minutes a day to keep the theory in mind.

2. Special Outlines:
Frequently used words have special outlines to save even more time than writing with the simple alphabet. In some cases, it is the same outline as a letter, but the context of the text facilitates transcription. I have listed some examples below:

3. Special Phrases:
If you think your speed will increase with the use of special outlines for words, you need to consider the time you can save by using special contours for whole sentences. You will find below two sets of special expressions containing the words "be" and "that". This is useful if you are just starting to use Teeline as they are very common word groups.

4. Control Your Nerves
The worst thing about creating dictation notes is that you do not know what words to write in advance. You will inevitably encounter words that you have not used yet, but do not panic. A technically incorrect structure, which hopefully will remind you later of the right word, is perfectly appropriate. If you are stuck, do not waste time managing it. Continue with the words you know best to follow the dictation. Obviously, that brings us back to the first point, exercise. Drill these unfamiliar words until you can write on the muscle memory, but do not sweat if you do not know the answer.

5. Set Realistic Targets and Achieve Them
Be realistic - you can only reach a speed of 100 words per minute or more if you have time for stenography. Set achievable (but challenging) goals in terms of the time and effort you want to put in place. Set a goal of 40 words per minute and master it before going to 50 words per minute, and so on.
